Grassroots funding
Did you know that Youth in Transition receives NO government funding?
We rely entirely on fundraising, donations, charitable grants, and the amazing support from our community to provide lifesaving support to our local young people.
Government and mental health experts have, in principle, recognised grassroots suicide prevention programmes of community organisations, like Youth in Transition and acknowledged that they are best placed to understand and meet the needs of their own communities. Many of us perform life-saving work on a daily basis, most of us unfortunately without government funding.
The level of need we’re now seeing is unprecedented. The on-going pressure to source funding requires time and resources that we would rather spend on helping vulnerable young people and their families.
That’s why we are putting our support behind Taranaki Retreat’s petition to the government. They’re asking the government to set aside a realistic annual grant fund to support grassroots suicide prevention organisations across the country, so that they can get on with saving lives, rather than with raising funds. Investing in suicide prevention is surely a no-brainer.
